I am passionate about honey bees and beekeeping as a hobby. My desire is to help people learn how to start beekeeping for fun or for extra income by making fewer mistakes and keeping healthier bees.
Beekeeping can be confusing with so many different opinions. As an EAS certified master beekeeper I'm working hard making several videos a week to help you unravel all the beekeeping chatter and find what works for you.
I've kept honey bees since the 90s and still find beekeeping an amazing life experience. Also in many of my videos I tie in some life lessons I've learned through beekeeping.
I offer many online beekeeping courses as well as a mentorship program:

Beekeeping: What To Do When Your Luck Runs Out
I see, no planning. I got this idea of planting a couple of trees that bloom first in your area, and then some trees that bloom the second and so on. What do you say to that? When do Linden trees bloom in your area?
That was neat 😊
On hot days I use ice bricks (the kind you use in lunch box) to help keep me cool. I put the brick in a bandanna and pin a couple to my shirt before putting on my safety gear. It helps or at least I think so.
David I usually just keep my pool full and the bees stop by for a drink.
I rarely use inner covers, dont really see the point... i do have some 10 tall inch boxes with a bottom in them to accept a jar feeder & vent holes, kinda like the burns feeder boards but its all one unit
I want to learn from a master beeker like you Dave to .
New subscriber really enjoying your videos and all the knowledge you are passing on is amazing. Thanks you.
Thank you so much for watching Robert! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Good to have someone to talk to when working in the hive I Like it
Yes, I've spent 16 years all by myself in making and editing my own videos, and now to have a yard team is AWESOME!! Now I just need an editor!
Another great video. I need to replace a queen in one of my 2 hives. Unfortunately I haven’t had success finding the queen to get rid of her. Tried 3 times now to find her. On top of that for some reason the bees are filling drone comb with nectar instead of drone brood. Making it difficult to do the drone comb method of reducing mite numbers. The learning continues
Try adding queen excluders between all boxes, wait a week, go back and look where the eggs are, and that will limit finding the queen to 10 frames. Carry that box away from the hive to inspect it so the queen can walk off into another box.
Question. Do bee's take water ever and put it in cells or they use it just to cool hive down. Thanks 😊
They use it to control the moisture in the hive and yes, they will add it to honey that is too dry.
Hey there! Absolutely awesome format of video. Thanks for sharing. Have a nice day!
Thanks! You too!
David, Great use of the feeder board.
Indeed, it provides water and it helps the hot air to rise.
Hi David, so nice to see you do this type of content with Reef. It would be nice to see you do hive inspections with some of your viewers. Maybe put it as a giveaway or in the “wheel”.
Yes, great idea.
So what do you do when you don't want a big hive, a single bottom is enough but your Queen mass produces. Do you just kill some and clean down a couple frames out to give them somthing to do?
Well, if you live in the country you could just not expand it and let them swarm.
My bees arrived today!
Awesome, so exciting and good luck.
Great 👍 info. Enjoy watching you work 😊 Thanks David
So nice of you to say, and I appreciate you for watching!
Hi Dave, what kind of trees are there on your bee yard?
I have no idea. Used to be just grass, and one summer I went too long no mowing that area and trees popped up so I left them. They are beautiful in the spring with flowers and have little berries on them.
Can you make a video about what flowers/plants are best to plant in my garden for my honey bees? Thanks so much!!!!
I've made a few but the problem is, within a 100 miles all of it changes.
I'm having to feed my splits and the colonies I took splits from in South England. I enjoy watching your videos and it definitely has helped me with beekeeping, I currently have 6 colonies
So nice of you, thanks for watching and glad to hear the videos are helpful.
I'm currently looking for an extractor, I would like to have 50 colonies. Do you have any recommendations for an extractor @@beek?
David Burns is the “KING BEE” Thanks for all of your time, knowledge and videos.
So nice of you! I appreciate those kind words.
First!! Heya David
Thank you David. Question. I have two brood boxes and a honey super. I used formic pro for my treatment this spring. Does this render the honey super completely unuseable for human consumption? Or is there a timeframe that that honey super can in fact be used for human consumption? Thank you very much for your response. David your videos are absolutely fantastic.
Hey Clyde always remember that your label is the law. Formic Pro according to their current label at this time allows for the use with honey supers on the hive when treating.
There was a virgin qeen on the bottom left side of the frame. The time stamp was 30:04 to 31:11. Check it out tell me if I'm right.
Bravo 👏 You are absolutely correct!!
@@beek that's awesome that you commented back to me. This is my second year at keeping bees. I haven't lost any hives yet but I'm struggling to understand necter flows and how to maximize my honey harvest. Your videos have been very informative and a fallback for me when I am struggling. Thank you for the wonderful content.
Good for you. Beekeeping is a bit of an art in learning nectar flows and how to take advantage of maximizing honey flows while keeping your hives strong. Thanks for watching my videos and join me on Thursday nights for my livestreams if you can. Here's the link: ua-cam.com/users/liveYXbQF0qia2U
Florida Panhandle here, and 100+ days are not unusual here. If you ever feel the top of a metal telescoping top you will feel how hot it can get. So What I usually do is put some 2 inch foam insulation on top of the hive with the reflective side toward the sun. Then during winter I put it under the top cover with reflective side toward the hive. Super cheap, and super effective!
Good tip
David, great tips!! What about a screen inner cover? Do i still need to vent the top cover?
Your call but why not.
David, it was 88 degrees and heat index of 95 - we had a pop up T-storm at 2 pm, cool down 10 degrees but back to 87 degrees. Bees kept on working.
Work horses!
Acorn foundation ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I am lucky to live in the NE US so it's cooler here than most places but it will still be in the 90s all this week. I actually do have my bees just inside the edge of a forest and I don't have problems with small hive beetle- I've only ever seen one in the last few years. Sometimes I just take a 1" long stick and prop the top open slightly. David is right, it helps so much. I run double deeps so I also have a hole in the top brood box which helps.
Thanks, very helpful. I was just doing some research on this subject.
Glad it was helpful!
Hey Dave! I think Dr Zac Lamas have come up with a much better idea than the standard alcohol wash. If I understand his theory correctly, the summary is: Varroa mites prefer drones. Making an alcohol was on "random" bees can be very misleading. If your target sample is just drones you can detect varroa infestation much earlier and more accurately. Plus you don't end up killing a bunch of worker bees unnecessarily. I was going to post a link to his website, but apparently that caused my post to get deleted, but it's easy to find if you make a search on his name. Would be great to hear your thoughts on it. Thanks!
Yes, I've studied his work and did my own experiments last year with the drones. I'm slow to move that direction just yet.
Do you have a beginner class online

Thanks!
Thank you so much!
Great video David 😅
Glad you enjoyed it
I don’t know how old you are but I got my drivers license in 2000 and gas was $1 a gallon
We'll never see that price again.
David do you think something like a easy pop up tent would work? I tried it yesterday around 4 pm and they (2 hives side by side) stared flying around like crazy so I removed it because I didn't want to upset them. Just started bee keeping in May of this year 2024.
Yes, it helps but it is just too windy and a storm will take it out.
Bought two nucs mid May that have had slow starts… so still feeding them with 1 to 1 in deeps like David does. Will a quarter under my top cover still provide insulation since I have those inner covers? If not how can I increase ventilation out the top?
It will help.
That's why it's a great idea to keep bees in insulated horizontal hives(Layens)😁
We’re thinking about starting a colony. This is a great video. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
I’ve got close to 2,000 frames with Acorn foundation and they’ve been great.
nice to hear
Thank you for your good ideas. Make a shade for our beehives is very important it will help to save our bee’s colonies in a hot temperature especially during summer. Hello from Japan.
Nice to hear from you from Japan and yes shade really does help.
What about the top cover metal telescoping or would wood be cooler?
Usually a metal top does well to reflect the sun especially if it is painted white. Metal does get blazing hot!!
Can I feed my honey to my bee
Many people do, and it's usually fine. There's the possibility that spores of brood diseases could be transferred in the honey, but if you didn't see any brood disease it should be fine. We often will transfer honey frames between hives and it's fine.
I’ve got screened bottoms and placed screened inner covers. Placed water buckets with burlap in it for the landing. Crazy weather.
Good for you, yes, it is a scorcher!
Great video David. I swapped out a solid bottom board to a screened bottom board on one of my hives tbis weekend. Really seems to be helping with ventilating the hive, haven't seen them bearding ever since. Hope you had a wonderful Father's Day weekend.
Yes, a screen bottom board is a HUGE plus in hot weather
Hi Dave, I have been doing bees for 18 years, my dad years before me. I came up with the idea of using my bee excluders as spacers, between the inner cover and outer cover. The bees are able to go in and out still because of the openings on the excluders. It was enough to help vent air out the top, and reduced the bearding by 1/2 the amount.
Yes, anything that provides some space should help.
New to Bee keeping bought my 1st 2 hives and on week number 4 super excited about this journey. Thank you for all your knowledge 🙏
Excited things are going well for you and thank you so much for watching.
#class
I live in Ireland and a brand new beekeeper and I just want to say I’m really enjoying your videos!! I’m stuck to them! 😂
Hello from Ireland, thanks for watching my videos. My wife has traveled to Ireland and loves it there!
I've heard stories of clusters which perished over the winter with plenty of food available, because they couldn't traverse the barrier created by the top bar of the lower frames and the bottom bar of the upper deep's frames. Now that we have rigid plastic foundation, something Langstroth didn't have available, once we've installed plastic foundation, maybe with the assistance of epoxy, is there a reason not to cut out 6 inches of the top and bottom bars to make the trip easier for bees in a cluster?
I haven't had or seen my bees not traversing the barrier as it's not really a full inch.
Ok. Not seen this question come up in all of your videos. We put our hive in the sun as a deterrent for SHB. And we keep strong colonies to help sequester the beetles. What about on hot days when the bees are bearding. I understand not all of the bees come outside but does it ever create a situation where the beetles have more freedom in the hive? Cheers
Not a problem because the hive is still so full of bees.
