    I see, no planning. I got this idea of planting a couple of trees that bloom first in your area, and then some trees that bloom the second and so on. What do you say to that? When do Linden trees bloom in your area?

    On hot days I use ice bricks (the kind you use in lunch box) to help keep me cool. I put the brick in a bandanna and pin a couple to my shirt before putting on my safety gear. It helps or at least I think so.

    Another great video. I need to replace a queen in one of my 2 hives. Unfortunately I haven’t had success finding the queen to get rid of her. Tried 3 times now to find her. On top of that for some reason the bees are filling drone comb with nectar instead of drone brood. Making it difficult to do the drone comb method of reducing mite numbers. The learning continues

      Try adding queen excluders between all boxes, wait a week, go back and look where the eggs are, and that will limit finding the queen to 10 frames. Carry that box away from the hive to inspect it so the queen can walk off into another box.

    Question. Do bee's take water ever and put it in cells or they use it just to cool hive down. Thanks 😊

    • @beek

      They use it to control the moisture in the hive and yes, they will add it to honey that is too dry.

    So what do you do when you don't want a big hive, a single bottom is enough but your Queen mass produces. Do you just kill some and clean down a couple frames out to give them somthing to do?

    Thank you David. Question. I have two brood boxes and a honey super. I used formic pro for my treatment this spring. Does this render the honey super completely unuseable for human consumption? Or is there a timeframe that that honey super can in fact be used for human consumption? Thank you very much for your response. David your videos are absolutely fantastic.

    • @beek

    Florida Panhandle here, and 100+ days are not unusual here. If you ever feel the top of a metal telescoping top you will feel how hot it can get. So What I usually do is put some 2 inch foam insulation on top of the hive with the reflective side toward the sun. Then during winter I put it under the top cover with reflective side toward the hive. Super cheap, and super effective!

    I am lucky to live in the NE US so it's cooler here than most places but it will still be in the 90s all this week. I actually do have my bees just inside the edge of a forest and I don't have problems with small hive beetle- I've only ever seen one in the last few years. Sometimes I just take a 1" long stick and prop the top open slightly. David is right, it helps so much. I run double deeps so I also have a hole in the top brood box which helps.

    Hey Dave! I think Dr Zac Lamas have come up with a much better idea than the standard alcohol wash. If I understand his theory correctly, the summary is: Varroa mites prefer drones. Making an alcohol was on "random" bees can be very misleading. If your target sample is just drones you can detect varroa infestation much earlier and more accurately. Plus you don't end up killing a bunch of worker bees unnecessarily. I was going to post a link to his website, but apparently that caused my post to get deleted, but it's easy to find if you make a search on his name. Would be great to hear your thoughts on it. Thanks!

    • @beek
      @beek 12 годин тому

      Yes, I've studied his work and did my own experiments last year with the drones. I'm slow to move that direction just yet.

    Can I feed my honey to my bee

    • @beek
      @beek 20 годин тому

      Many people do, and it's usually fine. There's the possibility that spores of brood diseases could be transferred in the honey, but if you didn't see any brood disease it should be fine. We often will transfer honey frames between hives and it's fine.

    I’ve got screened bottoms and placed screened inner covers. Placed water buckets with burlap in it for the landing. Crazy weather.

    Great video David. I swapped out a solid bottom board to a screened bottom board on one of my hives tbis weekend. Really seems to be helping with ventilating the hive, haven't seen them bearding ever since. Hope you had a wonderful Father's Day weekend.

    Hi Dave, I have been doing bees for 18 years, my dad years before me. I came up with the idea of using my bee excluders as spacers, between the inner cover and outer cover. The bees are able to go in and out still because of the openings on the excluders. It was enough to help vent air out the top, and reduced the bearding by 1/2 the amount.

      Yes, anything that provides some space should help.

    I've heard stories of clusters which perished over the winter with plenty of food available, because they couldn't traverse the barrier created by the top bar of the lower frames and the bottom bar of the upper deep's frames. Now that we have rigid plastic foundation, something Langstroth didn't have available, once we've installed plastic foundation, maybe with the assistance of epoxy, is there a reason not to cut out 6 inches of the top and bottom bars to make the trip easier for bees in a cluster?

      I haven't had or seen my bees not traversing the barrier as it's not really a full inch.

    Ok. Not seen this question come up in all of your videos. We put our hive in the sun as a deterrent for SHB. And we keep strong colonies to help sequester the beetles. What about on hot days when the bees are bearding. I understand not all of the bees come outside but does it ever create a situation where the beetles have more freedom in the hive? Cheers

      Not a problem because the hive is still so full of bees.
